Hemaka de Alwis

Chairman, Fairway Waste Management Pvt Ltd

Hemaka de Alwis is a businessman with a keen appetite for new ventures and a proven track record of effectively leading dynamic teams to business success. As the founder of the Fairway Group of Companies, Hemaka’s primary focus has been on creating new apartment communities in surroundings which are urban, yet possessing great natural beauty.
In 2002, Hemaka was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Export Credit Insurance Corporation (SLECIC). During his tenure (2002-2004), he succeeded in turning around this loss-making public corporation into a highly profitable one. Hemaka provided legal consultancy services to a wide variety of public sector institutions.

He was a Member of the Fair Trade Commission and helped draft the legislation for setting up the Consumer Affairs Authority, which succeeded the Fair Trading Commission. He is a Founder Member of the Consumer Affairs Council, which is the apex body of the Consumer Affairs Authority of Sri Lanka.

Prior to his entry into the public sector, Hemaka was a practicing attorney-at-law who specialized in civil/ commercial litigation and commercial arbitration for a portfolio of local and international clients in the banking, finance, insurance and other sectors since 1994. He was the Legal Consultant of the Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka during 1997 – 1999. He is also the author of the Constitution of the Asian Cricket Council.

Hemaka has a passion for arts and culture. Recently the Fairway Group has become the title sponsor of the Fairway Galle Literary Festival. He was part of the initiative which resurrected the festival after its 3 year hiatus. Further, the group has initiated the Fairway National Literary Award. The best literary work in Sinhala, Tamil and English are given recognition and cash prizes. The goal is to promote, recognize and reward literary excellence in Sri Lanka. In addition, he is also a patron of the Chamber Music Society of Colombo and the Soul Sounds Choir.

Hemaka is a founder member of the Condominium Development Authority, which is affiliated with the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce. He also was part of the consultative committee of the Condominium Management Authority which was responsible for drafting the new apartment ownership act of Sri Lanka.

Furthermore, Hemaka was nominated as one of the top 20 Business People of the Year by the LMD Magazine in 2014.


Dr. Pasad Kulatunga

Chief Technical Officer, Fairway Waste Management Pvt Ltd

Leaving his successful academic career to pursue his commitment to sustainability and environmental sciences, Pasad is an experimental physicist with a doctorate from the US who had taught several courses in energy and environment at the university level. He has studied alternative energy technologies in the United States and in Europe and continues to travel extensively on professional engagements in North America, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, and in the Middle East.

He was a postdoctoral research fellow at University of Wisconsin at Madison, where his research focused on experimental work in quantum computing. From the research lab he transitioned to follow his passion for teaching physics with an emphasis on research at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, in New York, USA. He was also a visiting scientist at the Danish Institute of Membrane Physics where he worked on imaging biological systems using quantum dots, and an assistant professor at Lawrence University, in Wisconsin USA. He joined the Lund University in Sweden to study the social and economic aspects of environmental issues, solutions and sustainable practices. He currently spends his time between Sweden and Sri Lanka.

The founder and the Managing Director of Sustainable Alternatives (Pvt) Ltd, Pasad brought together a diverse group of experts in technology, financing and project development with local and regional expertise to develop renewable energy solutions that are unconventional. Its mission being to evaluate cutting edge but economically viable alternative energy technologies which can be introduced to Sri Lanka and to the wider region. It actively lobbies the public and private sector to adopt these technologies and partners with these entities in implementation.

Sustainable Alternatives (Pvt) Ltd is a project developer that understands the technologies as well as the societal impact of adoption of policies and technologies. The collective expertise, reputation, networking abilities of the team that he has brought into Sustainable Alternatives has allowed it to promote and develop niche projects in the renewable sector in Sri Lanka.

Pasad is also the founder of EAS Ventures Ltd (USA) and founding partner of JPC Graphics (Pvt) Ltd (Sri Lanka).


Romesh Amarasinghe

Chief Compliance Officer, Fairway Waste Management Pvt Ltd

An accomplished and proactive professional with over 17 years’ of cross-functional, multi-sectoral experience with leading Fortune 500 multinational companies Romesh also serves as the Managing Director at Sustainable Development Consultants (Private) Limited. He possesses Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Northern Illinois University.

During his tenure at 3M and GE – in the Sri Lankan and Maldives Regional Market, lastly as the Country Head of the Healthcare Business of General Electric Company (GEHC) for Sri Lanka and Maldives, he developed a valued business networks at a local, regional and international level and has had extensive experience in the setup of and business development within these companies in Sri Lanka. Romesh has the ability to leverage widespread business networks, commercial and technical experience, to provide systemic, market solutions and contribute towards the elevation of Sri Lanka’s and the region’s industry standard to a global level.

As well as being the Managing Director at Sustainable Development Consultants and head of Consultancy projects in the Healthcare and Renewable Energy sectors, he also serves as a Director / Shareholder of Fairway City Hotel, located in the Central Business District in Colombo; a Trustee at Lanka Hydraulics Institute (Hydraulic Engineering Research firm) and a Director of Sustainable Alternatives, a start-up project development company in Renewable Energy.
